Visiting Year-Round

Native Plant Garden

More Wildlife Watching in the Garden

Spring Native Plant Sale: May 18-19
Fall Native Plant Sale: Sept 14

Centrally located between the Visitor Center, parking area and trailhead entrance, the two-acre Native Plant Garden boasts more than 250 species of native flowers, trees, shrubs, grasses and vines which attract more than 40 species of butterflies and countless birds. In the pond can be seen painted turtles, frogs, and newts, as well as dragonflies and damselflies. A bird blind overlooks a second, smaller pond, with meadow in the rear. Discreet seating areas encourage lingering.

A dedicated group of garden volunteers led by Caretaker Ryan Beltz helps to tend and improve the garden. A work area that includes composting, storage, potting stations, and a modest greenhouse allows our team to propagate natives for sale, for use in the garden, and also for select native garden projects in the local community.

Much is new and underway, including:

  • New attractive and functional timber frame entrance
  • New cedar railings and spur pathway to better see fern species
  • Plant markers and QR codes to help identify plants and learn an interesting tip
  • New observation deck over the pond

Upcoming plans and Wish list:

  • A grant from Pennsylvania's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will help fund old and damaged deer fencing, and reposition new fencing so it does not abutt to the Visitor walkway.
  • Restoration of the meadow area in the rear of the graden is now underway with assistance from a graduate student at Albright University. This area eventually will be opened to visitors to allow for a variety of habitats, and therefore, more bird species.
  • WISH LIST: Replace the bird blind with a canopy viewing area for a unique birding approach. Area below this 'tree house' viewing spot will provide additional, ground-level viewing. Cost is approximately $20,000 for architectural drawings, supplies, and labor.
