Raptors of South America
The two-volume book project by Matías A. Juhant, Ph.D.
The Raptors of South America, a landmark two-volume book project, will be the first-ever comprehensive reference dedicated to the raptors of South America. Covering more than 100 species of raptors from three orders: New World vultures (Cathartiformes), harriers, hawks, and eagles (Accipitriformes), and caracaras and falcons (Falconiformes), it is slated for publication by Princeton University Press in 2032 and 2033.
The project's lead author, Matías Juhant, is a former conservation science trainee and a current Research Associate of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. We are especially proud to highlight Matías as one of the many success stories of our conservation science program. First visiting the Sanctuary in 2007 at the age of 21, he participated in training and mentorship opportunities that helped shape his career as a raptor researcher and conservationist. Over the years, Matías has returned to Hawk Mountain on multiple occasions to collaborate on research, share knowledge with new generations of trainees, and strengthen international conservation partnerships. Today, his research has significantly advanced our understanding of South America's raptors, exemplifying the long-term impact that investments in training, mentorship, and scientific collaboration can have on global raptor conservation.
Beyond its scientific importance, this project will serve as a lasting conservation resource for the entire continent. You can help make this vision a reality. Your contribution will not only help document the diversity of these remarkable birds, but will also provide an invaluable educational and conservation tool for researchers, students, wildlife professionals, decision-makers, and nature enthusiasts for generations to come. About the Author
Matías Juhant was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where his passion for raptors began at an early age. This passion led him to pursue academic training in Argentina, Slovenia, the Netherlands, and the United States. His research focuses on the ecology, migration, behavior, and conservation of Neotropical raptors across South America.
Matías has been conducting remote fieldwork and large-scale, long-term surveys across multiple South American countries for over two decades, combining traditional field observations with citizen-science datasets, photographic analyses, and natural history approaches to better understand raptor ecology and conservation. His goal is to improve the scientific understanding and conservation of South American raptors while integrating broad-scale ecological perspectives with detailed natural history observations.
Support the Raptors of South America Project
To help advance this visionary and ambitious project, we are seeking inaugural book sponsors to support fieldwork across the diverse and often remote regions of South America, as well as to support a professional designer who will be responsible for editing more than 5,000 photographs and leading other outreach and communication activities related to the project.
