Hawk Mountain to host annual Native Plant Sale September 19

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary will host its annual Fall Native Plant Sale on Saturday, September 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside the Visitor Center. The sale will feature close to 100 species of native trees, vines, wildflowers, grasses, and shrubs. The sale is open to the public, and all proceeds benefit Hawk Mountain's conservation and education programs.

A variety of native wildflowers, including asters, goldenrods, milkweeds, coneflowers, and black-eyed susans, will be available for purchase. Knowledgeable native plant volunteers will be on hand to help visitors choose the right plants for their yards. To make selection easy, plants will be grouped by species and habitat type. For those who wish to dig deeper, the there will also be a range of books on native plant gardening for sale.

This year's sale will also feature a special raffle item: a chinquapin oak (Quercus muehlenbergii) seedling grown at Howard Nursery from an acorn gathered from the Oley Sacred Oak, with permission from the landowner. The Oley Sacred Oak is believed to be the oldest tree in Pennsylvania. The seedling offers a unique opportunity for a lucky raffle winner to grow a living descendant of this remarkable historic tree. The Fall Native Plant Sale coincides with Hawk Mountain's annual Monarch Day, also taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Families can enjoy kids' activities, hands-on learning stations, and a live monarch tagging demonstration at 1 p.m. Along with the plant sale, visitors of all ages have a great opportunity to explore native species, learn about pollinators and wildlife, and discover ways to support local habitats.

The sale takes place during peak raptor migration season, making September an exciting time to visit Hawk Mountain and watch the skies for migrating birds. Visitors can hike the Sanctuary's trails, visit the lookouts, and take part in the ongoing Autumn Migration Hawk Watch.
