Hawk Mountain Returns for Annual Breeding Bird Blitz for Conservation
Posted on June 03, 2026 in Giving
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is once again participating in the annual Breeding Bird Blitz for Conservation, a collaborative event hosted by the Pennsylvania Society for Ornithology that combines birding, community science, and fundraising to support bird conservation efforts across the state.
From June 5–15, 22 teams from across Pennsylvania will take part in friendly competition while collecting valuable breeding bird data and raising funds for conservation. This year, Hawk Mountain's team, Rosalie's Raptors, will participate in a Block Boosting Big Day on Friday, June 5, focusing their efforts on gathering breeding bird data in Pennsylvania Bird Atlas blocks within northern Berks County and southeastern Schuylkill County that have not yet received extensive survey coverage.
The team will include Sanctuary staff MT Grob, Laurie Goodrich, David Barber, and Bracken Brown. Named in honor of Hawk Mountain founder Rosalie Edge, Rosalie's Raptors reflects the Sanctuary's long-standing commitment to bird conservation and scientific research. You can donate to the Sanctuary's team via at breedingbirdblitz.org/rosalies-raptors through Monday, June 15.
Funds raised through this year's Blitz will support two important conservation initiatives: the Schuylkill County Conservancy and the Pennsylvania Bird Atlas Project, which is an initiative led by Hawk Mountain. If fundraising exceeds the event's goal of $22,000, mini-grants will also be awarded to three additional conservation organizations.
By participating in the Blitz, Hawk Mountain is helping advance one of the largest community science projects in Pennsylvania while supporting habitat conservation efforts close to home. The team's surveys will provide valuable information about where birds are nesting and breeding, helping scientists and conservationists better understand and protect bird populations across the region.
Team members are currently seeking supporters! Some donors may choose to pledge a certain amount per species observed while others make a one-time donation. Every gift helps support bird conservation and contributes to this year's fundraising goal.
