Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, the world’s oldest and largest member supported raptor conservation organization, recently welcomed new educator and raptor care specialist Daniel Jenkins. Previously, Dan served as naturalist and educator for the North Chagrin Nature Center in Ohio, where he spent the past several years in education and outreach positions as part of the Cleveland Metroparks system. Originally from Pennsylvania, he is an enthusiastic birder and educator.
“I'm thrilled to be part of such a dynamic team at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary," he says. "We are the best in the world and known globally as leaders in conservation science and education. I'm dedicated to sharing my passion of raptors and the natural world to help develop an appreciation and love that will be nurtured worldwide for generations to come. Pennsylvania is home and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is my calling."
Dan brings a wealth of experience in environmental education and ambassador animal care. He has experience in summer camps, off-site programs, public events, and ambassador animal care. He holds an Associate of Science in Wildlife Technology from Penn State and visited Hawk Mountain as a part of his coursework. While at Penn State, he served as a volunteer animal keeper at Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center, a bander for the Saw-whet Owl Network, and a songbird bander at a M.A.P.S. Audubon Society collaborative banding station, before moving on to connect people with his passion: wildlife and the natural world.
He is deeply passionate about interpretation and has presented at the 2024 National Association for Interpretation conference. His background also includes wildlife biology and stewardship work such as bird banding and invasive plant management.
“Dan’s enthusiasm for raptors, conservation, and natural history is contagious, and I’m thrilled for the impact he’ll have on our education and raptor care programs,” says Director of Education Megan Roselli.
“He brings to Hawk Mountain genuine excitement about our history and global reach, and a strong belief in our raptor conservation mission and teaching people about the natural world that connects all of us to one another. He will be a tremendous asset to the team,” she adds.
