White Underwing Moth

Last week, a staff member spotted a White Underwing Moth (Catocala relicta) on a tree trunk near our trails. It is one of the late summer moth flight species seen at the Sanctuary, and it feeds on poplar and willow trees.

An interesting fact is that this species that can hear bat frequencies and are known to undertake evasive flight maneuvers when bats are hunting in the area.
