Eastern Phoebe by Bill Moses

Spring is here—Eastern Phoebe (Sayornis phoebe) have returned to Hawk Mountain for the breeding season!

Staff and visitors have been hearing the raspy, two-part “fee-bee” song echoing through the forest as these familiar flycatchers make their way back to Pennsylvania after spending winter in the southeast U.S. and Mexico. Eastern phoebes are among the earliest of the springtime migrants and they will remain in the are for the rest of the breeding season. Look for a small, grayish-brown flycatcher with a dark head and pale white underside and breast. Note the characteristic tail bob while perched.
