Eastern Hognose Snake
Posted on in Recent Sightings by Hawk Mountain
The distinctive, thick-bodied eastern hognose snake (Heterodon platirhinos) was spotted by a Sanctuary educator near the forest edge by the Education Building!
Known for its dramatic defensive displays, the eastern hognose will flatten its neck like a cobra, hiss loudly, and even play dead when threatened. Despite the theatrics and it being mildly venomous, it’s completely harmless to humans and feeds mostly on toads. With its upturned snout perfect for digging in sandy soils, this reptile is always a treat to encounter on the Mountain.
