On April 24, Hawk Mountain will participate in the 2021 Raptorthon, hosted by Hawk Migration Association of North America (HMANA). Dr. Laurie Goodrich and the 2021 conservation science trainees are leading a team at Hawk Mountain with a focus on celebrating history of Hawk Mountain and its training program for young raptor conservationists. The team has set a goal of counting all the raptors and songbirds passing over the Mountain and hope to tally at least nine species of raptors in the day.

Raptorthon is an annual fundraiser event that engages bird and hawk watch sites and garners support for those organizations. The pledge proceeds are split between HMANA and the organization of your choice. The focus is aimed at getting the maximum count of raptor species in a 24-hour period, all while gaining support for raptor organizations across the continent. HMANA is a mostly volunteer organization that compiles count data from Hawk Mountain and 150 other count sites across North America.

Hawk Mountain hosts the longest-running migration count anywhere in the world, 86 years. As such it has been dubbed, the ‘mecca’ for many hawkwatchers and has served as a model to sites around the continent and globe. The long-term count involves daily counts by staff or trainees in spring and fall season and is supported primarily by donations and memberships. In spring 2021, we celebrate Hawk Mountain’s long-term count and role as a model for the world and invite you to join us.

Hawk Mountain's Raptorthon event will take place on April 24, with a rain date of April 25. Team Hawk Mountain Counting for Conservation will be on the North Lookout and South Lookout from 10 to 4 p.m.  We invite all Hawk Mountain friends and visitors to join us for all or part of the day to celebrate hawk migration counting at Hawk Mountain.

Those who wish to support Hawk Mountain can join in the fun throughout the day and/or make a donation at hmana.org/product/hms-raptorthon-2021.
