Winter Ecology is a field-based workshop for the amateur enthusiast, naturalist or student, that explores how winter helps shape the ecology of the Appalachian forest. Dr. Dan Ardia will share how plants and animals cope with winter and how we can study tracks and other forest cues to understand their behavior and resilience. Participants will enhance their field naturalist skills through observations, tracking, and wildlife ecology methods. No experience is needed but ability to hike on snow-covered trails is important.

An optional 1 hour recorded lecture will shared with all participants the week before the class.

Rain/snow date is January 18.

This course is part of Hawk Mountain's Appalachian Field Institute workshop series, featuring 1-to-4-day field-oriented workshops that are designed for the amateur or professional naturalist (ages 18+) who are interested in learning more about the natural history and ecology of the central Appalachians.

Certificates of completion and a course manual will be provided to all attendees. No experience is required, other than ability and gear for hiking rocky terrain on Hawk Mountain trails. Scholarship opportunities are available via our IDEA Fund, click here to apply. Courses are Act 48 eligible.
