Scarlet Tanager

During a bird walk last weekend, HMS President Sean Graces spotted many songbirds who have returned to the area for their breeding season. Among those was the scarlet tanager (Piranga olivacea).

The scarlet tanager used to be considered part of the tanager family, but recently it has been reclassified as part of the cardinal family. During the breeding seasons, the adult males have bright red plumage, while females and immatures remain a darker yellow.
