Red Trillium

Red trillium (Trillium erectum L.) have been spotted blooming this time of year in Eastern North America. This particular species has been removed from the family Trilliaceae and placed in the Liliaceae due to recent genetic findings. It can be found in rich moist woodlands, or in dryer and more acidic soil. This rhizomatous herb has maroon, ‘flesh-colored’ petals and a fetid smell that attracts flies. It can also be known as “stinking-Benjamin”.
