Deerberry in bloom

Deerberry (Vaccinium stamineum) is coming into bloom at Hawk Mountain! This deciduous shrub has a distinct, white, bell-shaped flower and produces a purplish-burgundy fruit that ripens by late summer. It's no surprise that their fruit feeds deer, but birds and small animals enjoy its fruit as well. They grow in the eastern United States and thrive in acidic and well-drained soil.
