Wing size and migratory habits related in soaring birds

Research by Hawk Mountain Post-doc Maricel Grana Grilli of Argentina reveals that wing size, instead of wing shape, relates to migratory habits in soaring birds.

Although past studies have indicated a relationship between wing shape and migratory habits, most of these focused on flapping or gliding birds, not soaring birds, like the turkey vulture.

Maricel recently co-authored a paper about this subject with Sanctuary director of conservation science Dr. Keith Bildstein and senior research biologist Dr. Jean-Francois Therrien.
