New record for Golden Eagles

163 and still counting

Today we celebrated a new record for golden eagles at Hawk Mountain, when Laurie Goodrich counted golden eagle number 163 at 2:15 pm. The bird flew by on the northwest winds that chased a passing cold front, and followed more than a week of warm, foggy, rainy or snowy days that produced very few migrants.

Perhaps most notable is the number 48, which is the new one-day record for golden eagles set on Saturday, November 3. That means more than 25 percent of all the golden eagles seen so far this autumn passed on one day, and the peak flight was directly tied to the ideal migration conditions that followed Hurricane Sandy.
