Swarovski Optik partners with Hawk Mountain
When you visit Hawk Mountain this autumn, you may notice some good glass: Swarovski Optik is now the Official Optics Outfitter of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and has provided eight pair of binoculars and two spotting scopes to the world-famous Sanctuary and raptor migration watch site.

Swarovski and Hawk Mountain are well-respected by the most discriminating birders in the world. A Swarovski sponsorship is such a natural fit,” explains Sanctuary president Jerry Regan.

The premium binoculars and spotting scopes are now in use by the biologists and international trainees who conduct the annual raptor count which continues daily through December 15. During lulls in the count, visitors may take a peek as well. Meanwhile in the Visitor Center, Swarovski brand optics are available for sale, or, one pair of Swarovski 8.5x42 EL binoculars valued at $2,400 will be raffled off on December 7, the top prize in the annual Mountain Raffle (www.hawkmountain.org/raffle).

During the daily count, identification experts use the optics to spot and record the number and type of species that pass overhead, while visitors, school groups and newcomers arrive to watch, learn and take in the sweeping views of the mountain and the migration. Data from the count represents the longest and most continuous record of raptor populations in the world.

“Exceptional binoculars are the most important tool we have,” explains Senior Monitoring Biologist Dr. Laurie Goodrich, and she’s not kidding. She sometimes will hold a pair of binoculars for more than nine hours at a time. That’s because while visitors to Hawk Mountain can ignore distant specs in the sky, the counters must attempt to identify every migrant, be it point blank or barely visible.

Counters also are challenged by scanning bright blue sky for hours at a time, and must attempt to discern structure and markings on distant birds. Having a tested, premium optic with the highest-quality glass guarantees superior resolution and reduces the eye strain and fatigue that can come from long hours of intense focus.

Year-round Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is open to the public as an eco-tourism destination, but is most famous for its great views of soaring raptors during the autumn migration season. During the daily count, identification experts spot and record the number and type of species that pass overhead, while visitors, school groups and newcomers arrive to watch, learn and take in the sweeping views of the mountain and the migration. A spring migration takes place as well, April 1 through May 15.

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is the world’s first refuge for birds of prey and an international center for raptor conservation. Its 2,500-acre sanctuary is open to the public year-round, and its North Lookout is one of the most recognized spots to observe the annual southbound migration of hawks, eagles and falcons.
