Cool orange fungi

Cool orange fungi

Our fungi expert and photographer Laura Weishaupt is at it again. She tells me this is called "Clavulinopsis aurantiocinnabarina," a mouthful for sure! It's also known as the yellow stuff growing all over the top of Hawk Mountain. Look around the Visitor Center, the parking area and amphitheater. Laura says it's one of her favorites, and certainly is colorful and easy to spot.

Broadwing nestlings by Laura Weishaupt

Broadwing nestlings by Laura Weishaupt

YES, we have a broadwing nest on the Sanctuary! By this time, the young are getting ready to stretch their wings, and our hope is that next year, we can tag broadwing young and follow their movements using a telemetry unit. If you're interesting in sponsoring such a project, contact Dr. Keith Bildstein. Photo by Laura Weishaupt.

Vireo easetern phoebes at the entrance gate

Visitors love to watch and listen to our phoebe nest at the trail entrance, and by now, it's a full house! The young should be taking first flight any moment. Photo by Jack Holcomb, Gate Volunteer.
